Education and Outreach Work 2009
Biography
Since 2002, Lizzie has had extensive, varied and international experience as a musical outreach worker and educator. She began her training at the Royal College of Music alongside her solo instrumental studies, with the renowned Kevin Hathway (co-principal percussionist of the Philharmonia Orchestra) who formed a unique micro orchestra called Elastic Band, whose prime function was to give highly original and interactive workshops in schools for children of all ages. Elastic Band has since left the RCM and is now the official education ensemble in residence for the Royal Albert Hall, renamed “Alberts Band”. Lizzie was lead violin for this orchestra for many years, and still performs with them as a guest. Since her training days, Lizzie has worked numerous times for the Philharmonia Education department, at countless schools in Bedford, Leicester, London, and has also toured to Abu Dhabi with them to continue similar workshop programmes with local schools there, a project which will repeat in 2010. Lizzie has also led the Wigmore Hall Chamber Tots Series for the GSMD, performing three times in the Wigmore for workhops aimed at 3 year old toddlers. She has also worked extensively for the Britten Sinfonia Education Dept, in a number of schools in Cambridgeshire, differing hugely in terms of level and background, from local PRU’s to award winning private schools. Lizzie has participated in a huge amount of incredible performances that culminate from week-long workshop sessions, with children as young as 6 performing their own music, often in numbers up to 1500, in venues such as the RFH, QEH, South Bank, Royal Albert Hall, Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi, numerous local concert halls in the UK, Cadogan Hall and many more.
On a different level, Lizzie has lead seminar-type workshops for adults in business, with creativity in business models, aswell as in depth interactive workshops about the positive effect of studying musical relationships as a model for better business ones. These workshops have taken place at the MBA business school of Cambridge University (for the Britten Sinfonia), and at international conferences in both London and Europe, also for “Orchestrate”, a wonderful organisation, where in just 2 hours, Lizzie and her colleagues teach a group of senior business delegates how to play an instrument, then learn a piece to play all together in a massive 500-person strong orchestra! They never believe it will work but it always does!
Lizzie’s educational work is also extensive in the rest of the world, with a particular focus on South America, where Lizzie has given workshops, masterclasses and seminars both on behalf of existing ensembles and in her own right in the following countries, Argentina (Buenos Aires English Schools and Salta local schools), Chile (Santiago schools, and Vina el Mar Academy), Brazil (Sao Paulo specialist music school-for underprivileged talent, for the Britten Sinfonia), Colombia (Ibague specialist music school for the British Council), Costa Rica (with the Royal Opera House Soloists).
Lizzie was invited to speak at the 2008 International Associated Board of Orchestras Conference on behalf of the Britten Sinfonia, about her extensive experience in musical education and outreach. She was one of only 3 performers present at a conference of over 500 musically related personnel.
Future work this year and into 2010 includes a possible return to Abu Dhabi with the Philharmonia, more work at Cambridge University Business School with the Britten Sinfonia, further work in the UK with the Philharmonia, including Music Quest , which is a project run by Children and the Arts that tours a mini orchestra of Philharmonia players around the UK, visiting specially sourced areas and primary schools that have very little or no access to music in their lessons.
